Colour and black & white photography both offer different moods, suit different tastes and have their own pros and cons. Personally, my preference is with black & white, however, I usually shoot in colour to allow more options. But discarding colour in a photo is not just a simple case of pressing a 'convert to monochrome' button! In order to transform with maximum effect, numerous stages of subjective consideration and digital manipulation is involved. How are the existing colours best altered so as when they are grey, they give the best tonal contrast to the colours they are surrounded by? The same goes for images such as high key (high contrast) or coarse grain prints. In the past, such effects were created in the dark room by adjusting exposure times of prints for all or areas of an image. Varying grades of photographic paper produced more contrasting or pixelated results, whilst lens filters adjusted the way certain colours were interpreted. Today, the same processes are rendered on a screen via proficient image retouching software. Photographs show on this site are all for sale – the majority in colour, black & white or custom retouched to suit personal requirements.
